Tomato Chutney

Tastes amazing with Dosa, Idli, Uttappam, Menapa Rotti, Paniriyam.

This is my mother’s recipe which everyone raves about. My younger son just loves to have it with Menapa Rotti/ Idli/Dosa. Spicy and Tangy flavour of this chutney is irresistible.


  • 5 to 6 medium sized tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp urad dal
  • 4-5 green chillies
  • 1 tbsp jeera
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 3 whole red chillies
  • 2 tbsp of oil
  • 1 tbsp of tamarind pulp
  • Salt according to taste

Tempering :

  • 3 tbsp of oil
  • 1 tsp of mustard seeds
  • 1 whole red chilli

Procedure :

  1. Cut the tomatoes in cubes.
  2. In hot-oil, add urad dal, jeera, green chili, garlic, red chili, and saute for about 30 seconds.
  3. Then add tomatoes, let it cook for 10 minutes until it becomes mush.
  4. Let it cool and then grind it after grinding it temper it.
